Shot on location at Montezuma's Well and Beaver Creek during the spring of 2005.
In order to get down into the lower part of the Well, you have to climb down a pretty long trail, but it's pretty safe. While we were there, there was a group of Japanese tourists visiting the site. When we were down at the bottom shooting, we heard the sound of some rocks falling down the steep rock wall opposite the trail. We looked up and in horror saw an elderly Japanese woman climbing DOWN the steep side walls. To our relief, she made it down safely.
The shot through the trees was inspired from a similar shot in Kirosawa's 'Rashomon'.
The second video in my "Arizona Stories' series, 'Montezuma Well' explores the central region of the state, focusing specifically on the title site. The Well (it's really not a well) is a huge, gorgeous depresion filled with water, but what fascinates me about it is that a long, long time ago, people actually lived in dwellings on the well walls. There's just something so.... otherworldly about the site that brings me back to it time and time again.
The water from the well actually feeds into nearby Beaver Creek, which is the second part of the video. It's interesting because the land by the surface of the well is what you'd expect from Arizona- somewhat dry, sort of desert-y, but you walk down the steps into the creek basin, and is a whole another world. It's green, lush, full of water and life. It's a great contrast.
