Some facts about 'Lovesong'

The opening lines come from a poem I came across online. I e-mailed the author and asked him if I could use them. He said sure. In gratitude, I sent him a copy of the finished video.

The video was shot on location in Tubac, the Tumacocari mission, and the Rio Rico Golf Resort.

My favorite shot, the one of the bird flying in and landing on the mission wall, was completely by accident. I had no clue the bird would be coming in.

The music in the video was composed and performed by Steve Hansen. It's from a royalty-free collection I purchased, but his music is great!

THE ARIZONA STORIES
The Lovesong of Southern Arizona • Montezuma WellLakeside

Running Time: 5 Minutes, 17 Seconds

This film was a very special one for me for two reasons- A) it was the time I had ever entered something like this, and B) it actually WON something.

This documentary short was filmed during an anniversary stay my wife and I went on down in Southern Arizona. We went and stayed down in Rio Rico at a nice resort, and she was understanding enough to let me go out and shoot the countryside. I was born and raised here in Arizona, and I find a certain beauty in the desert landscape. However, what really caught my eye were the contrasts between the old and the new. We saw ruined missions just right down the street from shiny new building created for the local artist colony in Tubac. We saw tile fountains and crumbling tombstones. There were signs of past life in the desert as well as signs that things were changing.

I took the footage of what I shot and combined it to make my homage to this part of the state. The first part, Death, focuses on the Southern Arizona that was. I love old missions, especially ones that are centuries old. The saying 'If these walls could talk' definately apply here. The second half, Rebirth. shows how the present is embracing the past through art.

Once finished, I read about this Phoenix Film Project's Winter Short Film Challenge. I decided to submit this video in the documentary category because it's documenting the change in the region. It was accepted for viewing. Unfortunately, I couldn't attend the event, but I later found out it had been selected 'First' in its category. Needless to say, I was thrilled.
